The One with Lots of Dots

The Yayoi Kusama ‘Give Me Love’ Exhibition at the David Zwirner gallery has been popping up on my Instagram feed for a while now, and what do you do when you see the same picture five times a day? You go take a picture for yourself of course

Chelsea is far becoming my favourite area of NYC so I didn’t need to be convinced very much to go down to the gallery.

The gallery is tucked away in what looks like a renovated warehouse, and only easily recognisable because of the queue of people lined up outside waiting to see the exhibition. I have to admit, I didn’t expect there to be a queue, and it seems the exhibit was more popular than I imagined.
On the outside the ’Obliteration Room’ (i.e. the dotty room) looks like a quintessential midwestern house, with its white porch and american flag, that has been dropped right in the middle of a warehouse. So much so I expected Dorothy and Toto to come running out.

Before you go in you’re given a sheet full of different sized dot stickers that you’re told to put anywhere in the building or on yourself. At the start of the exhibition the walls were stark white, with the idea that visitors stick the dots on them when they come and visit. Inside the room are normal household objects such as a couch, dresser and table that slowly transform into just a kaleidoscope of colours.

We were also told that we were only allowed three minutes inside (more of a crowd control issue then for any artistic purpose).

The room itself is filled with people taking selfies, sticking dots on themselves and others, and taking more selfies.

Once your three minutes are up you can exit into the main gallery area where the exhibit continues. Many people just go for the Obliteration Room, but actually there are lots of really cool pieces in the rest of the gallery.

Do your eyes hurt yet?
